SENIOR HIGHLIGHTS

Financial Aid Parent Meeting:There will be a meeting for parents of seniors to go over the FAFSA on Monday November 7that 7:00 p.m. in the high school library. Parents do not need to register to attend. If your son/daughter is planning to attend college next year, it is very important that you attend this meeting. Please mark your calendar.

Ohio University Southern Visit: There will be an Ohio University Southern Rep here on Monday October 10thduring 3rd and 4th periods in Mr. Adams classes. Any senior that does not have Mr. Adams is welcome to hear the presentation but will need to sign up in the guidance office by the end of the day Friday Oct. 7th.

Meet MSU NIGHT: Morehead State University will be at Park Place in Ashland,KY on Tuesday October 18, from 4:00-8:00p.m. Admission fees will be waived for any student applying to Morehead State during that event.

Parent-Teacher Conferences: Monday November 7; 3:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary.

Graduation Cap & Gown and Announcement Orders: The Herff Jones Representative has been here and passed out order packets to seniors. Mr. Thompson will be here to pick up the orders on Tuesday October 11thduring lunch. Payment will need to be made on that day (Mr. Thompson has discussed with the students how much payment will be required at pick up.) The deadline for orders will be Jan 1, 2012.

Senior Pictures: Senior yearbook pictures will be taken October 14that 8:00a.m. Every senior will need to have a picture taken in order to be in the yearbook. Pictures will be available to purchase.

2010-2011 Yearbooks are in. There are a few yearbooks available for those who did not order.

ACTDates: December 10 (Registration deadline November 4)

February 11 (Registration deadline January 13)

**The October ACT is a MUST for seniors…this may be the last testing before some college and scholarship deadlines. Cost is $34. ACT recommends registering on-line. If you do not have a credit card for registering on-line, see Mrs. Day for a packet. Special note: The ACT Assessment Plus Writing may be required by some colleges and universities. The cost of the Plus Writing version is $49.50. Students need only take the Plus Writing version once.

Marshall University ACT: The ACT is given the first Friday of each month; scores are only good for MU. The cost is $45 and must be check or cash only. Call MU at 304-696-5816 for more info.

ACT & SAT Prep Classes: Mountwest Community and Technical College will hold a 6 week ACT Prep Class on Thursday evenings October 20-December 8, 2011. The time will be 6:00-9:00p.m. and cost will be $200, which includes textbooks and materials. Contact MCTC at 304-697-5616 to register. Marshall University, Ohio University Southern Campus and Sylvan Learning Center offer ACT/SAT Prep Classes throughout the year. If interested, students should listen for announcements or call MU at 304-696-6855, OUSC at 533-4600, or Sylvan at 304-736-6988.

ACT Fee Waivers: Juniors and seniors who meet the economic need indicators are eligible to use an ACT fee waiver to cover the cost of the test. Students may take the test two times using a fee waiver form. If a student qualifies for free or reduced lunch, they should see Mrs. Day for details and the form.

College Visits: Each senior is permitted to take 3 excused days to visit a college or other educational institution. A completed College Day form (with parent and teacher signatures) must be submitted to the guidance office at least two days before the scheduled visit. Students must schedule the visit with the college in advance. Upon returning to school, students must present to the guidance office a signed form from the college visited. No excused college visits will be permitted during the month of May.

Scholarships: Scholarships of which the guidance office receives information will be announced in this monthly newsletter; please understand that there are thousands of scholarships available which can be found on-line and through other sources. Examples are credit unions, banks, and companies with which parents may be employed. Good on-line sources for finding scholarships are: http://www.fastweb.com/

NOTE: Scholarships require a transcript from the guidance office to be sent along with the scholarship application. Students should not wait until the day they need to send the application to ask for the transcript. Mrs. Day is sometimes out of the office for meetings and there are many other demands in the guidance office.

Prudential Spirit of Community Award: Deadline is November 1. For students who have distinguished themselves through volunteer work. Complete application form at http://spirit.prudential.com/ or www.principals.org/spirit. Applications must be completed and submitted to Mrs. Day by due date and then one person from CHS will be nominated.

Horatio Alger Association Scholarship Program: Deadline is October 30. Sponsored by the American Electric Power Foundation, $5,000 scholarships are awarded to provide assistance to students with financial need who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Coca-Cola Scholarship: Deadline is October 31. 250 scholarships will be awarded through the web-based application and is open to all students.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards:Deadline is October 31. Awards based on volunteer activities. Forms are available in the guidance office.

Nestle Very Best In Youth: Dead line is November 1. Nestle/HOBY have partnered to recognize young people who are making a positive difference in lives other than their own. Winners will receive $1,000 to donate to the charity of their choice, along with other prizes. Numerous volunteer experiences are needed in order to apply. The Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship: Deadline is December 1. The Elks National Foundation awards 2.3 million dollars in college scholarships to a total of 500 high school seniors. Students applying should be at or near the top of their class academically; be active in both school and community activities; be recognized as leaders by their peers; and need financial assistance to attend college. Applications are available in the guidance office.

SAE Engineering Scholarships: Deadline is December 1. Two types of engineering scholarships are available – undesignated and designated. Fee to apply is $5 per application.

Society of Yeager Scholars: Deadline is December 1. Yeager is Marshall University’s four year full scholarship. Minimum requirement for consideration is acomposite of 28 on the ACT or 1260 on the SAT. A lengthy application is required. Please see MU’s website for more info. Applications are available in the guidance office.

Elks National Foundation Awards: Deadline is December 2. 500 scholarships awarded across the US. Judging based on scholarship, leadership, and financial need. Two different scholarships available—Elks Most Valuable Student and Elks Legacy Awards. Applications available in the guidance office.

AXAAchievement: Deadline is December 15. To qualify, students should be well rounded, determined to succeed and have demonstrated achievement. Apply athttp://www.axa-achievement.com/

NFIB Young Entrepreneur FoundationScholarship: Deadline is December 31. Open to any graduating high school senior that owns and operates their own small business and plans to attend a two or four year college. Apply on-line athttp://www.NFIB.com/YEA
