SENIOR HIGHLIGHTS

November 2013

 

College Representatives:  Throughout the semester there will be representatives from various colleges visiting to speak with seniors. Many will waive application fees if the students apply that day. Most reps will be here during 3rd or 4th periods. Students should listen for upcoming announcements concerning these visits.

 

CHS Yearbook Senior Pages: Pages for parents to congratulate 2014 graduates. There are a limited number of pages left and they will be sold on a first come-first serve basis. Prices are $50 for half page and $100 for a full page. Please contact Robin Kimball for more information or to purchase. Order forms are enclosed.

 

Yearbooks:  2012-2013 yearbooks are in and can be picked up from Mrs. Kimball.  2013-2014 yearbooks can now be ordered at wwwyearbooksforever.com . The cost is $45 but price will go up after Jan 1.

 

 ACT Dates:   December 14 (Registration deadline November 8)

                      February 8 (Registration deadline January 10)

**The October ACT is a MUST for seniors…this may be the last testing before some college and scholarship deadlines. Cost is $36.50. ACT recommends registering on-line. If you do not have a credit card for registering on-line, see Mrs. Day for a packet. Special note: The ACT Assessment Plus Writing may be required by some colleges and universities. The cost of the Plus Writing version is $52.50. Students need only take the Plus Writing version once. (STUDENTS MUST UPLOAD A PICTURE TO THEIR ACT ACCOUNT. STUDENTS NEEDING TO UPLOAD THE PICTURE CAN SEE MRS.DAY FOR ASSISTANCE)

 

Marshall University ACT:  The Walk-In ACT is given each month; scores are only good for MU. The cost is $45 and must be check or cash only. For more information, go to: www.marshall.edu (student resource center link)

 

ACT & SAT Prep Classes:  Marshall University, Ohio University Southern Campus and Sylvan Learning Center offer ACT/SAT Prep Classes throughout the year. If interested, students should listen for announcements or call MU at 304-696-6855, OUSC at 533-4600, or Sylvan at 304-736-6988.

 

ACT Fee Waivers:  Juniors and seniors who meet the economic need indicators are eligible to use an ACT fee waiver to cover the cost of the test (basic ACT only). Students may take the test two times using a fee waiver form. If a student feels they qualify for the waiver, they should see Mrs. Day for details and the form.

 

College Visits:  Each senior is permitted to take 3 excused days to visit a college or other educational institution. A completed College Day form (with parent and teacher signatures) must be submitted to the guidance office at least two days before the scheduled visit. Students must schedule the visit with the college in advance. Upon returning to school, students must present to the guidance office a signed form from the college visited. In order to be excused for the day, the above procedure must be followed. No excused college visits will be permitted during the month of May.

 

Scholarships:  Scholarships of which the guidance office receives information will be announced in this monthly newsletter but please understand that there are thousands of scholarships available which can be found on-line and through other sources. Examples are credit unions, banks, and companies with which parents may be employed. Some very good on-line sources for finding scholarships: www.fastweb.com, www.collegeboard.comwww.finaid.org

NOTE:  Scholarships require a transcript from the guidance office to be sent along with the scholarship application. Students should not wait until the day they need to send the application to ask for the transcript. Mrs.Day is sometimes out of the office for meetings and there are many other demands in the guidance office. Please allow 2 days to receive a transcript.

 

 

 

 

SAE Engineering Scholarships:  Deadline is December 1. Two types of engineering scholarships are available – undesignated and designated. Fee to apply is $5 per application.

 

Society of Yeager Scholars:  Deadline is December 1. Yeager is Marshall University’s four year full scholarship. Minimum requirement for consideration is a composite of 28 on the ACT or 1260 on the SAT. A lengthy application is required. Please see MU’s website for more info.

 

CHS Academic Boosters Senior Salute:  Applications are now available in the guidance office. Students must have a cumulative GPA if 3.2. Applications must be turned in to the office by Dec 3.

 

AXA Achievement:  Deadline is December 15. To qualify, students should be well rounded, determined to succeed and have demonstrated achievement. Apply at www.axa-achievement.com

 

Buckeye Rural Electric Co-op Scholarship Program:  Deadline is Jan 20. Parents of the student must be a member of the Buckeye Rural Electric Co-Op. This year, there will be two girls and two boys receiving scholarships on the local level. Winners then qualify for the state competition. To qualify, students must have a 3.5 Cum GPA. After applications are completed, there will be one student nominated from CHS.  All applications need to be turned in to

Mrs. Day.  Applications available in the guidance office or on-line at www.ohioruralelectric.coop (click on the “Youth Programs” tab.)

 

Touchstone Energy Special Achievement Scholarship: Deadline is Feb 1. Parents of the student must be a member of the Buckeye Rural Electric Co-Op. To qualify, student must have a Cum GPA of 2.75.  Students will be judged on integrity, accountability, innovation, and commitment to community. After applications are completed, there will be one student nominated from CHS. Students should submit applications to Mrs. Day by the deadline. Applications available in the guidance office.

 

Ohio Association of Career Colleges & Schools Legislative Scholarship Program:  Deadline is Feb 1. Over 275 scholarships available ranging from $2,000 to $12,995.  For more information, visit website at  www.ohiocareercolleges.org (Many different scholarships available).

 

SunTrust Off To College Sweepstakes: $1,000 scholarships for high school seniors selected by random drawings every two weeks, from October – May.  Apply online at www.offtocollege.info

 

Scholarships.com:  Website is open to high school seniors.  $10,000 will be awarded in scholarship money at www.scholarships.com

 

Abbott and Fenner Scholarship:  Deadline is June 14. Scholarship is in the amount of $1000. Students will submit an essay on the topic that appears on the scholarship page of the web site. Please visit http://www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.htm
